I LOU O Vol. 3—No. 3 U. S. Navy Pre-i^light School, Chapel Hill, N. C. Saturday, September 30, 1944 Cloudbusters Play" Naval Academy Today Pre-Flighters Are Underdogs At Annapolis Marines Defeated By 27-14 Margin In Season Opener The Marines of Cherry Point and the Cloudbustei’s of Chapel Hill battled on even terms for two periods last Sunday afternoon, but the third quarter saw the latter score three touchdowns in quick succession to register a 27 to 14 victory. For two periods the Pre-Flight- ers had their backs to the wall, and the Marines led at half-time, 7 to 6. But the Killingermen were not to be denied, and with Otto Graham leading the way with his sharpshooting passing and elusive running the Cloudbusters took complete charge of things. A crowd of some 8,000, the larg est to ever witness a Pre-Flight football game in Chapel Hill, was cn hand to see both clubs in their season opener. The Marines showed power and more power in the first period, backing the Cloudbusters up twice deep in their own territory, and finally punching across the game’s first touchdown early in the second period. But speed and clever ball- handling, plus a fighting young line, was to write the story of vic tory in the third period for the local eleven. It Was not all Graham in the Cloudbuster backfield. There was Frank Aschenbrenner, and Spec Sanders, and Stan Koslowski, and Bill Wilson, and G. V. Fellabaum, and J. T. Levay. All figured in the Pre-Flight victory. The Marines launched a drive late in the first period from the Navy 48. With Halsall passing and running and Marcolini tear ing gaps in the Navy line to reach the Pre-Flight five, Halsall broke Army-Navy Week End For Chapel Hill OTTO GRAHAM, left, and Bobby Weant, right, took time out from practice sessions during the past week to wish one another good luck this afternoon. Graham, the former Northwestern All-American, will captain the Cloudbusters against the Naval Academy at An napolis, while Weant will lead the Tar Heels against Army at West Point. Football fans here will be watching both teams as they go against the “cream” of football in the East. over tackle to score the game’s first touchdown early in the second period. Lambert place-kicked the extra point. A 15-yard penalty put Cherry Point in the hole midway of the second period and a partially blocked kick gave the Navy the ball on the Marine’s 24. Graham passed to Harding and Levay for a first down on the 10 and Wilson broke off tackle to score. Fella- baum’s placement was wide. The Pre-Flighters uncorked a drive early in the third period See MARINES, page 4 Game Here While the varsity football team engages the Naval Acad emy this week-end, the “B” squad will meet the Marine Air Base from Kinston, N. C., here. Site of the contest will be Navy Field Number One, located just below Fetzer Field. The game will get underway at 1630. Also coming up is a soccer game between the French ca dets and Duke University in Durham next Wednesday. This afternoon at 1430 at Annapolis, Md., the U. S. Naval Academy will open its fifty-second year of intercollegiate football competition against the U. S. Navy Pre-Flight Cloudbusters. Last year the two teams met at Annapolis, with the Pre-Flighters coming out on the short end of a 31 to 0 score. Again the local team is the underdog, while the Naval Academy, in the words of Ted Husing, has the finest team, on paper, in the history of football. Everyone of their starting eleven for today’s game was in uniform for the 31 to 0 victory last year. The Cloudbusters left Chapel Hill by bus yesterday at noon and v/ere expected to arrive at An napolis early last night. They will return tomorrow. Drills during the past week con sisted mostly of working on a pass and running defense to stop the opposition. The Cloudbusters themselves were not too offensive minded. The addition of Stan Koslowski at fullback and Ray Bray at tackle will strengthen the team consider ably.
